Cole-Response

Everett, I like the idea of followin a NBA team throughout the season, it will be very interesting and there will obviously be tons of information. I also thought that if you wanted you could do a post about the different shoes that the players are wearing since that seemed to really interest you. You could also do stories on the individual players and what they do when they're not playing or during the off season.
As your field experience it would be really cool to actually go to a game. Im sure seeing them play in real life is much better than watching on TV.

Katrina's Second Post

Well i don't know much about The Celtics or basketball teams in general I guess, but I can see that this will obviously be a good topic for you to explore. I have watched one Celtics game on TV, the last world series game of last year, and it was very interesting. I don't know if it would be possible for you to go see one of their games, but I'm sure it would really add a whole new perspective to your isearch. Maybe you could also add some posts about the players lives and the training that they go through, or what their diet is for a typical day. This would add a lot more of a personal, 'behind-the-scenes' outlook on the players that your isearch might benefit from.

Chaunceys Second Response

Everett, you seem interested in the Celtics and I think its a good topic to do. I never thought about following a sports team for an I-Search and if you like the topic and the team, I can imagine you'll like it a lot.
I don't know a lot about the NBA or basketball in general but for your interview, I would see if you could talk to someone inside the organisation, like a trainer or you could try to talk to a sports broadcaster about the Celtics. You could try calling up ESPN and see if anyone has time there or you could get in tough with a writer at Sports Illustrated or another sports magazine.
If the draft happens when we are doing this Isearch, I bet that would be a very good thing to do.

Jackson's second response

I didn't know that KG had the Obama endorsement on his shoes; thats pretty cool. Since you changed your topic from shoes to The Celtics, I think you'll find it a lot easier to get current info every week. If their winning streak continues, you could do a post about that, or just about their 21-2 record in general. Good topic choice.

Hayden- Second Response

Not being very interested in basketball, reading your blog is like a first grader reading Nostradamus. Still, your blog seems to be very interesting and there will certainly be a good amount to talk about as you follow their season. What could you do for an interview thing or whatever? Maybe you could coax Jewitt into buying you tickets to a game "for school reasons" . . .

Did you delete shoes info?

Everett - Talk to me about your blog - Did you delete the old information and start with the Celtics info? I think this topic is an excellent choice for you - and the Celtics are certainly on a winning streak!!!!!!!!

Response to the Nov 4th Game @ Houston

For Election Night 2008, the Celtics star forward Kevin Garnett wore shoes reading "Embrace Change: Vote '08". Election night was a special night for many of these players that have been outspoken regarding the election.

The Celtics had a overall strong showing both on the offensive ande defensive sides of the ball. The "Big Three" consisting of Paul Pierce (13 points, 9 rebounds), Kevin Garnett (14 pts, 11 reb), and the offensive star of the night (29 pts, 5 reb, 5 assists) all had their consistenly solid games.

Possibly the most impressive showing, though, was the unsung preformance from Kendrick Perkins. Perkins recorded 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 blocks. He was also the main force in keeping Yao Ming, the tallest player in the NBA, to only 8 points in the game. This is more than 10 points less than his season average. Perkins defense was key in the Celtics win against a good team from the very tough Western Conference.

This win gives the C's a 3-1 record. This is going to be a long interesting season. 4 games down, 78 to go.

Allen, Garnett come up big for Celts while Rockets' Yao, Artest struggle in loss

The Celtics played two games this week, one against the Rockets in Houston, and one at the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that used to be the Seattle SuperSonics but transferred to Oklahoma City.

On election night 2008, Ray Allen was clearly the key player in this game for the Celtics, scoring 29 points of the teams 103 total. Allen also added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Kevin Garnett posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Kendrick Perkins had a solid game defending 7'5'' center Yao Ming, holding him to a sub-par 8 points.

The Celtics ended up shooting 52% from the field which is respectable, however, some stats of possible concern is the unusually high number of turnovers that the Celtics gave up (17). Also, they shot only an average 75% from the free throw line.

On Second Thought...

I apologize, but after some thought, I have decided that I would be better for me to follow that Boston Celtics for my project. I feel this way because I think that It might be harder for me to produce weekly updates on the topic of basketball shoes.

Again, I think that since I would be playing basketball throughout the length of the project, so that will be a motivating factor to continue my project. This topic would be constant and ongoing, as the season will be going on for quite some time.

The internet will be a major resource for me, I could use the Celtics' home page, www.celtics.com, or the nba home page for news regarding the entire legues news that mey effect the entire team, www.nba.com. Also, it may be fruitful to use magazines like ESPN, and Sports Illustrated. Daily newspapers will add other insight to this topic for me.

This choice will make the reserch easier in some ways, however it amy make it more difficult by having to juggle the various news feeds.

Well, i can tell that you are definitely more interested with sports. But would it interest you the whole entire time? I think if you picked the doing your isearch on basketball shoes you would do very good, but it would be interesting to do something you don't know as much about, like the homicide issues. You don't seem to know as much about it, and it might keep you more interested longer than the shoes. But I think you should do what feels more comfortable and more exciting to work on. Just make sure if your doing something about the basketball team, you don't let your personal feelings for them get in the way of the paper.

I-search topics

Everett, you seem to be more interested in basketball. So I would recommend choosing one of those two topics. Now following a basketball team might be easier for six months, and you might be able to tie in new technology as well, so you can combine the to topics. And tou having background information will help start the project.

My Selection... (5 Paragraph response)

I have been in a toss up between my top two topics since the beginning of the project. These two are the Boston Celtics, covering their season by reporting on the games and the off-day practices. The other would involve talking about the advancements in basketball shoes. Nike typically releases new shoes at least once or twice a month. Just released has been the Nike Hyperdunk. I have personally acquired a pair of these and am eager to find out if they will enhance my game like the shoe critics say that they may. I am interested in what the professional basketball players are wearing, and why they make these selections regarding their shoes. I am also interested in how players like LeBron James and Kobe Bryant help Nike design their signature shoes.

I believe that I will choose the topic regarding the basketball shoes. Basketball shoes are kind of a hobby of mine. Just the aroma of a new pair of sneakers is one of my favorite smells. Call it what you like, but sneakers to me are a passion. I think that thiss topic will keep me interested in my paper for the entire length of the process. It will keep me interested in the topic because I will still be playing basketball through the length of the paper. Most years, I will buy three or more pairs of basketball shoes for the season, so that will keep me in the market, therefor, I could be able to research what will be the best desision for some one that has my style of play. My busiest time will be coming up very soon, because the holidays seem to be when companies release the most high quality shoes.

There a lots of websites that review basketball shoes such as www.nicekicks.com and www.kicksnet.com that are useful to find information. I found a decent amount information in the databases with magazine and newspaper articles. The Internet will have to be the base of all of my research. Possibly, I would need to go to athletic shoe store to try on shoes for myself.

The issue is ongoing in the way that different shoes will be released throughout the tim period that I will be doing this project. I will be able to review these shoes in detail. Future shoes could be based off of an older shoe, or could be a new style that could change the game, i.e, Nike Hyperdunk. Information on things such as material may not change however.

This has the potential to be a challenging topic, because it will require more types of research than I have been used to in the past. I look forward to learning about what the best choice of shoes would be for me.

I think the idea of following the Celtics would be a really good topic, especially if a sports journalism is something you would consider as a career. Maybe you could talk to a local journalist to get ideas from them, or a basketball coach. It sounds like that topic would also be constantly changing, which would be good for the essay.

It would also be really cool to research crimes. There's so much unnecessary violence. Researching what motivates people to kill, or who normally commits the crime would be really interesting. You could do something like, how have murder mystery shows and horror movies almost glamorized crimes? I don't know if there would be enough information for that, but it's just a suggestion.

Boston Celtics

All of your topics would allow you some very interesting and in-depth research. However, only one of your possibilities allows for any intensive live updates during your researching period. Killing- maybe on day to day crimes but not on the motive. Shoes- really cool topic with a lot of different information but at most, you will probably receive only a few updates throughout your research. That would of course then leave the Boston Celtics. This would create a great opportunity for you to continually, almost daily, track the team and their current standings. You could probably even interweave this with shoe technology, tracking a players performance based on his shoes. That is if you want to go that in depth. Your blog posts could be supplemented with embedded RSS feeds of their scores in games. Chances are you could land a few interviews with local sports journalists to counteract any possible bias you might display. That would be a potential trap however. If they are indeed your favorite team, you should be careful not to allow any personal feelings to leak into your research, such as excluding statistics that go against them. If you are careful to avoid that, you should have a great topic.

narrowing your three topics

Everett, I think that if you're interested in sports that you should follow something sports related. Personally, I'm not a sports person but I think that the Boston Celtics topic would be good to follow. This topic would follow the three criteria because the games would be going on during your research and would be constantly changing. If a game got rained out, who won who lost, new players etc. etc. ... The shoe topic would also be interesting because shoe companies are coming out with new shoes all the time.
I feel like the crime topic would be really hard. It seems unlikly that you'll find information on different crimes around the world. If you go with the sports topics maybe you can check out the companies website such as Nike or the Boston Celtics website, I think they have such a thing, and maybe they'll give you more information on your topic. I think the Boston Celitcs topic would be the best way to go.

Three Possible Topics...

Everett Martin
I-Search

For my possible topics to write about in my I-Search essay, I was thinking about choosing covering the Boston Celtics, because of my possible interest in the career of sports journalism. I would cover their games and workouts on off nights, much of this research would be done through the newspaper, the internet, and other print forms like magazines. Another was about basketball shoes. I was interested in the technology in the shoe, and how one shoe greatly differs from another, and also the marketing aspect of how companies like Nike introduce their product to the general public. Finally, I was interested in the motives that people have for committing crimes throughout the world to see if they differ in different regions.

Researching the motives for the motives of crimes was not hard, because unfortunately, homicide is committed every day many times throughout the world. I am interested in the topic, but am not committed to it. The motives in some stories online are not always given to the public to see. I found that spouses typically kill their husband or wife because they have been unfaithful. Others plead mercy killing or murder for religious reasoning. A high percentage of homicide is committed within gang relations. This is still a possibility for me to write about.

A much lighter note is the topic regarding basketball shoes, I am interested in this topic and think that it would be an easy topic for me to write about. I feel that the technology in basketball shoes has changed the game. Recently, Nike released a shoe called the Hyperdunk. It is supposed to be made up of some of the lightest and strongest material made today. They use what is called FlyWire technology, this was inspired by the cables in suspension bridges. Also used in this particular shoe, is what is called lunar foam, which is extremely lightweight, shock absorbent, and relatively inexpensive to produce. I am also interested in the way that companies like Nike and Adidas market their items. I know that Nike took full advantage of the Olympics and the “Redeem Team” in this past year as a major selling point.

The Boston Celtics will be playing their season during the entire time that I will be doing the research for the project, so I think that it would be fun to talk about their games, practices, and players during their season. Another topic involving the Celtics that I am potentially interested in involves the rookies on the Celtics, in their first year in the NBA, Bill Walker and J.R. Giddens. I am interested in following the rookies in their first year of professional basketball and how they handle the pressure.

Of the three topics I am leaning towards the sports related topics. I am more interested in these topics and fell that I will be able to add more personal insight into the essays. I don’t have a personal connection to homicide and the motives of the people that commit such crimes. However, I feel that it would be an interesting topic for me to research.
